More than 20,000 marijuana-related deaths were recorded on US death certificates between 2000 and 2024, according to a new analysis of CDC WONDER data. The analysis found 1,918 marijuana-related deaths in 2024 alone, with the number rising sharply from 129 in 2000. Researchers also note that the figures likely underestimate the true toll because many cannabis-related deaths may not be coded as marijuana-related.
